STORAGE & RETURN TO USE

Returning a hypercar to use after storage: plan the handover first

A collection car’s first outing after time away should begin with preparation. Make the return-to-use process part of the storage arrangement, rather than a conversation at the garage door.

Give the team notice of your intended collection

Tell the storage team when you would like to collect the car and what you intend to do next. A local drive, a transporter collection and a trip straight to the dealer create different planning questions. Ask what preparation has been agreed and how much time the facility needs to arrange it.

If the date changes, update the people involved. An owner representative should know who can approve additional assessment and how to contact the owner. The point of a plan is to make outstanding questions visible before the collection time arrives.

Review what happened during storage

Ask for the agreed record of observations, movements and specialist visits. Confirm whether the car was moved, whether any work was carried out and whether anything remains to be discussed. Keep invoices, appointment records and owner approvals together.

Compare the return handover with the condition record made when the car arrived. If there is a discrepancy, discuss it before leaving. This is an opportunity to establish a shared understanding of the vehicle’s condition, not a substitute for a qualified inspection.

Let the right specialist set the checks

Use the exact manufacturer’s handbook and any retailer advice to determine what is needed after the period of inactivity. Avoid treating a generic online checklist as authority to disconnect batteries, alter charging equipment, raise the car or attempt mechanical work.

Tyre condition and pressure, any displayed warnings and the maintenance position belong in that review. Michelin advises using the vehicle manufacturer’s recommended pressures and explains the difference between cold and warm tyre readings. If there is doubt about tyre condition or an unresolved warning, arrange the appropriate specialist assessment before driving.

Check the security arrangement separately

Confirm that the tracking service and contact details are in the intended owner’s name where applicable, and establish who is responsible for subscription questions. Review the owner devices needed for the agreed authorisation routine and ask the provider how missing or replaced devices should be handled.

Where a transport or service procedure was used during storage, confirm how normal operation is restored for that system. Ask the installer or provider if anything is unclear. A car moving normally is not, by itself, a demonstration that every security service and account has been checked.

Make the physical handover unhurried

Arrange time for questions and a demonstration where needed. Check that the appropriate keys, owner equipment and documents are accounted for. Make sure everyone understands which items are being handed to the owner and which remain with a representative under an agreed arrangement.

If you are using a transporter, clarify the loading and collection arrangements with a provider experienced in the actual vehicle. Loading clearances, recovery methods and mechanical preparation should be addressed by the appropriate specialists. This guide does not prescribe a loading or recovery technique.

Close the record after collection

Record the handover date, recipient and any agreed follow-up. If the car is moving to a different storage facility or collection location, update the people who need to know through a private channel. Avoid publishing movement schedules, account information or storage access details.

A good return-to-use plan is a coordinated conversation between the owner, storage partner, retailer, transporter and security provider where relevant. Each party has a defined part to play. Starting early gives them the opportunity to complete it properly.

  • Collection date and intended next movement confirmed.
  • Storage observations and any work reviewed.
  • Manufacturer-led assessment arranged where needed.
  • Security contacts, devices and service questions checked.
  • Keys, documents and handover responsibilities agreed.
  • Outstanding actions recorded with a named contact.

Useful references

Consult your vehicle’s own handbook and retailer. McLaren provides model-specific owner information; other manufacturers have their own documentation. Michelin’s inflation guidance is a general tyre reference, not a hypercar-specific pressure specification.
